A highlight-reel goal and a 49-save performance were not enough for Farmington, as the Tigers surrendered three goals in the third period of Thursday’s 4-1 loss to Edina in the quarterfinals of the Class AA state tournament.

The Hornets (26-1-1) drew first blood with a goal from senior forward Olivia Kilberg, a lead that was quashed when Tiger junior Ellie Moser notched a shorthanded goal worthy of looped replay.

Moser outraced a Hornet defender for her own clearing attempt, knocked the puck around Edina goaltender Anna Goldstein, and smacked the puck into the net to send the teams into the second period break tied 1-1.

Edina coach Sami Reber may have been impressed with Moser’s effort, but wasn’t as pleased with her own players.

“We weren’t too happy,” Reber said, adding that the brief reprieve the players have after a period ends was interrupted. “Normally we give them some time to recoup, and we came in and calmed them down a little bit,” Reber explained.

Farmington (16-12-1) head coach Jon Holmes praised junior goaltender Abby Bollig’s play, she of the 49 saves, and said that a mix of fundamentals and acrobatics allowed her to thwart the Hornets for two periods.

“Abby was able to do her positioning to put is in a spot where she was stopping the ones that needed to be stopped,” Holmes said. “And then went above and beyond that with (Dominik) Hasek-like cartwheels to keep us in that game,” Holmes added.

Junior forward Lolita Fidler scored the go-ahead goal for the Hornets, and fellow junior Emily Oden scored 32 seconds later to provide Edina with a cushion for the rest of the game.

Senior forward Sophie Slattery added a final goal less than two minutes after Oden.

For the Hornets, Reber says it’s all about focusing on what’s in front of them.

“One of our themes all year has been to stay in the present,” Reber said. “Getting to this point, we’re almost to our end goal so we’re just trying to take it game by game.”
