COLLEGE HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Minnesota, Minnesota-Duluth Men's and Women's Squads Ranked Among Nation's Best

Gopher Men Sweep Michigan, Bulldogs Bounce Back

D1 Men

Minnesota-Duluth (13-5-4)

After going winless in three straight games, the Bulldogs edged St. Cloud State 4-3 in the series finale at Duluth’s Amsoil Arena last weekend. The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 4 in the latest United States College Hockey Online Poll, the highest of Minnesota schools.

Minnesota (13-5-2)

Six straight wins for the Golden Gophers propel them into the No. 7 spot in the national rankings, coming on the heels of a sweep of Michigan over the weekend by scores of 5-2 and 4-2.

Bemidji State (15-8-3)

Coming in at No. 18, the Beavers have not played since a split with Bowling Green two weeks ago. The Beavers host Ferris State this coming weekend.

Minnesota State (14-8-2)

The Mavericks split with Bowling Green at home last weekend, losing game one 3-2 and taking game two 5-3. The Mavericks travel to Michigan Tech for next weekend’s series.

St. Cloud State (10-11-1)

The Huskies have won just one of their last three games, with the silver lining being that the lone victory against No. 4 ranked Minnesota-Duluth over the weekend.

D1 Women

Minnesota-Duluth (15-4-3)

A weekend sweep of Minnesota by scores of 3-2 and 5-3 lifted the Bulldogs to No. 2 in the national rankings. The Bulldogs will travel to Bemidji for a series against the Beavers this coming weekend.

Minnesota (16-5-2)

Ranked No. 4, the Golden Gophers are coming off the aforementioned sweep at the hands of Minnesota-Duluth.

Bemidji State (9-12-1)

The Beavers split with Ohio State over the weekend, losing game one to the Buckeyes 2-1 and taking game two 3-1. The Beavers will travel to Duluth for a series against the Bulldogs this coming weekend.

St. Cloud State (6-16-2)

The Huskies were unable to score a goal against No. 1 ranked Wisconsin, falling to the Badgers 9-0 and 2-0. The losses mark the third straight game that the Huskies have not scored a goal.

Minnesota State (6-17-2)

Against No. 13 North Dakota over the weekend, the Mavericks took consecutive losses by scores of 3-2 and 4-0. Up next for the Mavericks is a series on the road against St. Cloud State.

D3 Men

Augsburg (10-3-2)

The Auggies enter the week ranked No. 11 in the latest USCHO poll, but a tour of Wisconsin left the team with a mere split, beating Wisconsin-Eau Claire 5-1 and losing to Wisconsin-Stevens Point 5-2.

Concordia (9-5-1)

A tie and a loss to Hamline was the result of the weekend for the Cobbers, who will travel to Augsburg for a series this coming weekend.

St. Thomas (8-5-3)

The Tommies split this weekend with a 3-1 win over Wisconsin-Stout and a 5-1 loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

St. Mary’s (9-6-2)

Another team that played a pair of Wisconsin opponents, the Cardinals downed Wisconsin-Stevens Point 4-2 and fell in overtime to Wisconsin-Stout by a 6-5 score.

St. John’s (8-6-3)

The Johnnies lost to St. Olaf 2-0 on Friday before tying the Oles 2-2 in the series finale. The Johnnies next face Bethel on Thursday Jan. 19 and Saturday Jan. 21.

D3 Women

Augsburg (11-4-0)

The Auggies thumped Bethel twice over the weekend, downing the Royals by identical 4-1 scores. The Auggies, ranked No. 10 in the latest USCHO poll, have won three of their last four games.

Concordia (10-4-1)

A sweep of Hamline by scores of 3-1 and 3-0 helped the Cobbers rebound after being swept themselves by Wisconsin-River Falls last weekend.

Gustavus (8-5-2)

The Gusties tied St. Catherine’s 3-3 in game one and won game two 3-2 over the weekend. The Gusties will take on St. Olaf next weekend.

Bethel (6-7-2)

Four straight losses drops the Royals to sixth in the Minnesota Interscholastic Athletic Conference standings, with the most recent losses coming against conference leader and 10th-ranked Augsburg.

Hamline (6-7-1)

Back-to-back losses to Concordia drops Hamline to below .500 for the season, as the Pipers will look to get back on track against St. Benedict’s on Wednesday night.
