When it comes to playing sports, Grace and Chloe Heiting refuse to choose between hockey and lacrosse, where the juniors led the Raptors in scoring last season.

But when it comes to being recognized while playing, Chloe says that suiting up for the ice is preferable.

“I’m kind of used to it at this point,” Chloe said of the obvious questions that tend to follow games when fans browse the game programs and find two Heiting’s in the same grade. “With hockey it gets better because it’s the only time people can tell us apart.”

Chloe is the East Ridge goaltender, while sister Grace plays forward, but their level of significance was nearly identical in Wednesday night’s 4-1 win over Suburban East Conference rival White Bear Lake at the Bielenberg Sports Center in Woodbury.

Chloe made 23 saves and held the Bears (5-3-0, 2-1-0) scoreless until the final minute of regulation, when White Bear Lake’s Kailee Snyder scored on a seemingly directionless shot flung at the Raptor net.

Grace Heiting scored two goals and added an assist for the Raptors, with Siobhan Claugherty and Brehna Walz each scoring once.

Grace is the leading scorer for the Raptors (5-2-0, 3-1-0) with three goals and eight points.

Fifteen of Chloe’s saves came in the third period alone, when, while holding a 4-0 lead, the Raptors took two penalties with 4:23 to play in regulation.

“To get to the level we need to get to as a really great team, we need to do a better job in the third period to finish off teams,” Raptor coach Tom Kulenkamp said after the game. “We let them in a little bit there and we shot ourselves in the foot by taking some bad penalties at a bad time.”

Despite the poor timing of the infractions, Kulenkamp said he’s pleased with the way his team has been performing recently, winning four straight games.

“The girls are playing unselfish hockey right now,” Kulenkamp said. “Good (defense), we’re keeping everything to the outside. I like the way we’re playing right now,” Kulenkamp added.
