It was impossible to tell who was screaming louder in the Shakopee locker room after the Sabers completed a come-from-behind victory over Eastview on Tuesday night.

The coaches? Or the players?

Shakopee assistant coach Jason Carter says that it was probably the former.

“I think the coaches were,” Carter said with a grin. “This is a big win all around,” Carter added. “Everyone is very excited.”

The Sabers (2-0-2, 2-0-1) kept their unbeaten streak alive on Tuesday, scoring three unanswered goals to edge South Suburban Conference rival Eastview 4-3 at the Shakopee Ice Arena.

Eastview (3-2-0, 2-1-0) took a 3-1 lead over the Sabers after Mary Keating notched a pair of goals less than one minute apart midway through the second period to swing the momentum firmly to the Eastview side.

Senior forward and UConn commit Natalie Snodgrass also scored for the Lightning.

However, Shakopee’s Tristen Truax banged in a rebound at the buzzer to pull the Sabers within one.

Truax then scored the tying goal midway through the third period, again on a rebound.

“We work on making sure the girls are in the right spot to crash the net for rebounds,” Carter said of the Sabers’ penchant for pressuring an opponent’s goal, adding that the philosophy also applies to the defensive end of the ice. “Blocking shots is something we harp on every single day.”

Sophomore forward Emily Roder scored in the first period for the Sabers.

Truax, a senior forward, led the Sabers in scoring last season with 21 goals, and thinks she may have regained her scoring touch during Tuesday’s game after scoring just once in the Sabers’ first three contests.

“I’ve been working really hard in games, trying to move the puck around,” Truax explained. “I think this game was my big breakthrough.”

Freshman forward Paige McNeil scored the game-winner with just over three minutes left in regulation, lofting a shot over Eastview goaltender Kaitlyn Pellicci’s shoulder before being mobbed by her teammates.

“I’ll try to shoot harder (next time),” McNeil said with a laugh of her knuckling shot. “But the floater thing works sometimes.”

Even with a low velocity, McNeil’s goal touched off a spirited celebration from Sabers both on the ice and on the bench.

“It was so cool, because then everybody came after me,” McNeil said with a smile. “That was the coolest thing ever, going down the line (with) everyone screaming.”

McNeil will get her next chance to have her teammates scream for her when the Sabers take on Burnsville in a South Suburban Conference bout on Nov. 29.
