The Minnesota Wild knows when it has talent in its own backyard, and has not been shy about drafting native sons. In fact, the home team has selected 12 State of Hockey natives since the 2000 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

With around a dozen Minnesotans having a chance at being selected during next week's draft, it’s plausible that the Wild could add more homegrown talent to the organization.

The first Minnesotan the Wild selected was Jake Riddle of Minneapolis in 2001. Riddle retired in 2012 after spending the season with the Quad City Mallards of the Central Hockey League.

The Wild selected A.J. Thelen No. 12 overall in the 2004 draft, the highest the Wild have ever drafted a Minnesotan.

Most recently, Jack Sadek, member of the 2015 state champion Lakeville North team and current Golden Gopher, was drafted by the Wild in the seventh round last year.

Following are the Minnesota natives drafted by the Wild:

  • 2001-Jake Riddle, Minneapolis
  • 2002- Michael Erickson, Elk River
  • 2004- A.J. Thelen, Savage
  • 2006- Chris Hickey, St. Paul
  • 2006 - Kyle Medvec, Apple Valley
  • 2009- Nick Leddy, Eden Prairie
  • 2011- Mario Lucia, Plymouth
  • 2011- Nick Seeler, Eden Prairie
  • 2012 - John Draeger, Edina
  • 2012- Louis Nanne, Edina
  • 2013- Avery Peterson, Grand Rapids
  • 2015- Jack Sadek, Lakeville

Will another be added to the list next week?
