T.J. Oshie has never had a problem with the big moment - whether scoring state championships for Warroad High School, making Olympic history with an unforgettable shootout performance or notching a NHL playoff hat trick, as he completed last night in overtime, to seal Washington’s Game 1 victory over Pittsburgh.

Oshie’s heroics gave the Capitals a 1-0 advantage in their series with the Penguins, in a series packed with players that have ties to the State of Hockey.

Oshie, Virginia’s Matt Niskanen and St. Cloud’s Nate Schmidt all skate for the Capitals, while Matt Cullen (also from Virginia, Minn.), Phil Kessel (played for University of Minnesota) and Sidney Crosby (won a national championship for Shattuck-St. Mary’s) are key players for Pittsburgh. Niskanen led the Capitals in ice time in Game 1, logging more than 32 minutes, and was a +2 in the contest.

Earlier this season, Washington D.C.-based Monumental Sports Network profiled the Caps’ trio of Minnesotans, highlighting the impact playing in Minnesota had on their development and future professional careers in a two-part video.
