Edina Captures Four Youth State Tournament Titles

Minnetonka, Orono, Osseo-Maple Grove Among Teams Hoisting Championship Trophies

The 2016 Minnesota Youth Hockey State Tournaments wrapped up last weekend and per usual, provided outstanding performances by teams and players and exciting action for families and fans from across the State of Hockey. 

Following are brief recaps of the 1youth hockey state tournaments: 

Junior Gold (A, B, 16)

Edina took the A division of the Junior Gold level with a 2-1 win over Wayzata in the finals. This marks the second consecutive state title at this level for the Hornets, which beat Lakeville and Minnetonka in the quarterfinals and semifinals to advance to the championship game.

St. Thomas Academy downed Wayzata Blue 4-2 in the B division title game. The Cadets outscored their opponents 13-4 in three tourney games.

Minnetonka Blue won the 16 division, giving the Skippers two titles at the youth levels this year. The Skippers defeated Blaine Blue in the title game by a score of 2-1.

Bantam (AA, A, B)

At the Bantam AA level, overtime was the theme, as Minnetonka defeated Moorhead 3-2 in the second extra session to win its second consecutive Bantam AA title. Patrick Wyers' rebound goal won it for the Skippers, which had previously defeated Cloquet in the semifinals 4-3 in three overtimes. The Spuds went four overtimes in their semifinal, a 4-3 win.

Orono edged Warroad 6-5 in an A-level thriller, making it two A titles in a row for the Spartans. Orono skated past Edina 4-3 in the quarterfinals and East Grand Forks 6-3 in the semis. Warroad beat Greenway 3-1 and Mounds View-Irondale 6-1 before the championship game.

Edina Green played great defense in the Bantam B State Tournament, allowing opponents to just one goal in each of the three games. The Hornets edged Elk River Black in the title game 2-1 after defeating Rogers 5-1 in the semifinals and Rosemount 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

Peewee (AA, A, B)

Osseo-Maple Grove downed Duluth East at the AA level 3-2, with the Hounds playing in their third straight one-goal game. The Leafbirds beat Edina in the first round 4-0 and Eden Prairie 8-4 in the semifinals. The Hounds beat Cottage Grove 2-1 and Elk River 4-3 to earn their trip to the title game.

Mound-Westonka snuck past Rochester 3-2 in the quarterfinals and cruised past Alexandria 5-2 before edging Johnson-Como-NSP 4-2 in the A title game. The Polar Devils had scored 12 goals in their first two tournament games before being held to just two scores in the championship game.

Edina Green claimed another B level title with a 4-1 win over Osseo-Maple Grove. The Hornets outscored their three tournament opponents 21-3 over the weekend.

Girls (19U, 15UA, 15UB, 12UA, 12UB)

White Bear Lake edged Eagan 2-1 and Edina 3-1 to claim the 19U girls' title. Edina beat Osseo-Maple Grove 3-2 in the semifinals, and Eagan thumped the Leafbirds 9-2 for third place.

Another Edina Green squad earned a state title, with the 15UA Hornets taking down Roseau 2-1 in the finals. The Hornets beat Wayzata Blue 2-1 in the quarterfinals and Anoka-Rogers 1-0 in the semifinals. Roseau defeated Rochester 3-0 and North Wright County 3-1 for their place in the title game.

Northeast Metro shut out Minneapolis 2-0 to earn the 15UB state title, giving Northeast Metro its second shutout of the tournament after beating Osseo-Maple Grove 4-0 in the first round and Wayzata 3-1 in the semifinals. Minneapolis beat North Wright County 4-3 and Sauk Rapids-Sartell 2-1.

Andover halted a string of Edina Green titles by stopping them 4-3 in the 12UA title game. The Huskies shut out Chaska-Chanhassen 7-0 and Osseo-Maple Grove 4-0 before the title game, while the Hornets crushed Warroad 10-0 and squeaked by Minnetonka 3-2. The Huskies finished the season with an impressive 59-1-1 record.

At the 12UB level, Lakeville South shut out its quarterfinal and semifinal opponents 5-0 and 2-0 before downing St. Cloud 5-3 in the title game. St. Cloud earned its way into the championship with a 5-1 win over Grand Rapids-Greenway and a 5-3 win over Stillwater White.
