Junior forward Casey Mittelstadt scored two goals to lead Eden Prairie to a 4-2 win over Prior Lake in Wednesday’s Class 2A, Section 2 finals, earning the Eagles their third straight trip the state tournament.

Prior Lake, which upset Minnetonka, the top seed and the former No. 3 team in the state, in the semifinals, struck first, with senior forward Curtis Hansen scoring at the 4:22 mark of the first period. Mittelstadt answered less than a minute later, tying the game 1-1 with the score remaining tied after the first period.

Mittelstadt kicked off the second frame with an unassisted goal, and junior defenseman Nicky Leivermann added another to give the No. 6 Eagles (19-7-2) a 3-1 lead entering the third period.

The Lakers (20-8-0) came within one late in the third period, with junior defenseman Jake Cohn scoring his first goal of the postseason on the power play. Eden Prairie’s Hunter Johannes scored on an empty net with 30 seconds to play to squelch the comeback bid.

Senior goaltender Drew Scites made 25 saves for the No. 17 ranked Lakers, while Eagles’ senior goaltender Shawn Durocher stopped 19 shots.

Eden Prairie’s Mittelstadt, a University of Minnesota commit, scored six goals and nine points in three section playoff games.
