After upsetting the No. 1 team in the state in Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Cretin-Derham Hall seemed poised to continue its Cinderella tale, taking a 1-0 lead over No. 8 Wayzata in the early minutes of Wednesday’s Class 2A, Section 6 finals.

However, Wayzata’s Andrew Urban tied the game midway through the first period and the Trojans scored three goals in the final period to emerge victorious and punch their ticket to the state tournament with a 4-1 win over the Raiders.

“I was happy when we were going into the second intermission, so we could talk to them and explain to them ‘get back to our game’,” Trojans coach Pat O’Leary said after the win, referring to the break before the third period with the score tied 1-1.

Senior forwards Mark Senden, Billy Duma and Dillon Riley scored in the third period for the Trojans (19-8-1), who are making their first trip to state since 2013.

Senior goaltender Alex Schilling made 19 saves in the win for the Trojans.

O’Leary praised the play of his veteran upperclassmen, as well as his team’s ability to stand by their style of play.

“I’ve been saying since day one, to win in sections you got to have good leadership, and you got to have discipline,” O’Leary said.

Senior forward Ryan Smith scored the lone goal for the No. 4 seeded Raiders (16-12-0), and goaltender Mike Magnuson made 41 saves on 44 shots in the loss.
