It had been over 158 minutes since Eden Prairie’s Lauren Oberle scored her last goal, and while skating possibly her last career shift, broke the drought at the best time.

Oberle, a senior, one-timed a pass from junior forward Naomi Rogge during a five-on-three power play to give the Eagles a 3-2 win in overtime in Saturday’s Class 2A final, ending Maple Grove’s impressive run in its first State Tournament appearance.

“I just saw everyone pile on top of me,” Oberle said after the game. “I couldn’t breathe,” Oberle added with a smile.

The Eagles’ sophomore goaltender, Alexa Dobchuk, left everyone on the ice breathless, except for Dobchuk herself.

Dobchuk performed a perfect butterfly save with under 10 seconds remaining in the third period, snuffing out a seemingly guaranteed scoring chance by the Crimson’s junior forward and star player Taylor Wente.

“Whenever you make a save, especially in these big moments, you kind of have to forget everything,” Dobchuk said. “It doesn’t matter who’s coming down with the puck, it doesn’t matter how much time is left, or even what game it is. You have to stay calm and expect anything.”

The ability to expect the unexpected came in handy in the extra session, when Wente stole the puck in the Eagles’ zone with the Crimson killing a penalty.

Instead of drifting with the puck to kill time, Wente stickhandled into Eden Prairie’s slot and ripped a shot that hit the post, coming within an inch of making the Crimson champions.

“We were one post away from being on the other side of this game,” Crimson coach Amber Hegland said.

Crimson junior goaltender Breanna Blesi made 41 saves in the loss after shutting out two-time defending state champion and No. 1 seed Hill-Murray in Friday’s semifinals.

Hegland added that she won’t focus on bad bounces or missed chances when she reflects on this season.

“They did it together, relying on one another,” Hegland said of her players. “Diving in front of shots, still believing, (being) down five-on-three, that (they) were going to give everything for the people next to me in that locker room.”

Class AA Third Place Game:

Hill-Murray 5, Edina 3

Its chance at a third consecutive Class 2A title dashed in the semifinals, Hill-Murray refused to fold in Saturday’s third-place game, out-shooting Edina 41-21 in a solid 5-3 win.

The Pioneers (29-1-1) raced out to a 3-0 lead on goals by senior defender Mekenzie Steffen, senior forward Laura Anderson and sophomore forward Abigail Boreen. The Hornets answered with three goals of their own, with junior defender Grace Bowlby, sophomore forward Lolita Fidler and sophomore forward Emily Oden notching scores, all in the second period.

Senior defender Kenzie Prater scored the game-winning goal for the Pioneers, and Boreen added an empty-net goal with two seconds left in regulation to seal the win.
