Carly Bullock left her fourth straight Class 1A State title game without a voice, but she did have the all-time Minnesota State High School League goals record for tournament play.

The Blake senior forward scored three goals and added three assists to power the Bears (26-2-2) to their third state title in four years, thumping St. Paul United (23-6-1) 8-0 in Saturday’s championship game.

Bullock’s three goals gave her 22 for her career in four trips to the state tournament, surpassing the previous record held by former Park Center star and Olympian Krissy Wendell.

“It’s amazing to walk away with a state championship senior year,” Bullock said after the game. “For it to be my senior year, and for our team to play as well as we did…it’s just the best,” Bullock added.

Blake defeated St. Paul United twice during the regular season by close scores of 3-1 and 3-2, and Blake coach Shawn Reid said the difference could have been the calm his team exuded throughout the game.

“I think we weren’t squeezing our sticks as hard,” Reid said. “The first two times we played St. Paul United, they really bottled us up and it was tough to get any space. Today, for whatever reason, we just had a little more open ice.”

The record-breaking goal was classic Bullock, as she accepted a pass in the neutral zone, sped past a defender and calmly drilled a shot over the right shoulder of United goaltender Catherine Johnson.

Bullock said the in-game scoreboard graphics were her first indicator that she was in new record territory.

“I wasn’t aware of the record before the game,” Bullock said. “But after they showed it on the video board, everyone was telling me (about it).”

Bullock wasn’t the only Bear to light up the scoreboard.

Junior forward Lucy Burton scored a pure hat trick in a span of 4:24 of the second period, when the Bears scored five goals to enter the third period with a commanding 7-0 lead.

Burton had not scored in the postseason until Saturday, and said she simply embraced her teammates’ encouragement for a pregame spark.

“I think I just came out really focused, really determined,” Burton explained. “Our whole team supported me, amped me up,” Burton added.

Both Bullock and Burton were named to the Class 1A All-Tournament Team, with fellow Bears senior defender Sylvie Wallin and freshman defender Madeline Wethington, who also scored goals in the title game, as well as defender Grace Vojta.

In the post-game press conference, Reid asked Burton if she remembered what she said her focal point was before the game.

“(That) the only thing I wanted to do was have fun,” Burton said with a grin.

Junior forward Mariah Gardner continued her impressive tourney, posting a goal and two assists as the Warriors edged the Mirage 3-1 in Saturday’s Girls' Class A third-place game.

Gardner finished the tournament with two goals and eight points. Kaitlyn Kotlowski and Madison Oelkers also scored for No. 2 seed Warroad (25-4-1), and goaltender Emma Brunelle made 24 saves in the win.

Senior forward Sophie McGovern scored the lone goal for No. 4 seed Proctor-Hermantown (20-9-1).
