GIRLS' 2016 STATE TOURNAMENT: Class AA Quarterfinals Preview

Unbeaten Hill-Murray Returns to Defend Title

CLASS AA QUARTERFINALS

No. 2 Edina (Sec. 6AA, 19-7-1) vs. Eastview (Sec. 3AA, 18-6-4) - Thursday, Feb. 18, 11 a.m.

The Hornets did not allow a goal in the Section 6AA playoffs, shutting out Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Wayzata by 6-0 scores. Leading scorers are sophomore forward Lolita Fidler (19-27-46) and junior forward Sophie Slattery (12-24-36). 

The Lightning pulled off back-to-back overtime victories in the Section 3AA semifinals and finals to earn a trip to State. Connecticut commit and junior forward Natalie Snodgrass (34-19-53) scored both game-winning goals for the Lightning. 


No. 3 Eden Prairie (Sec. 2AA, 19-7-2) vs. Forest Lake (Sec. 7AA, 18-7-3) - Thursday, Feb. 18, 1 p.m.

Junior forward Naomi Rogge (21-18-39) leads Eden Prairie, one year removed from a state tournament appearance, after the Eagles upset top-seeded Minnetonka in the Section 2AA finals.  Four of the Eagles’ seven losses have been by one goal. 

The Rangers upended No. 1 seed Elk River/Zimmerman in double overtime in the Section 7AA finals, earning their first appearance in the State Tournament in three years. Senior goaltender Kaylee Remington made an impressive 49 saves in the playoff win.

No. 1 Hill-Murray (Sec. 4AA, 27-0-1) vs. Sartell/Sauk Rapids (Sec. 8AA, 21-7-0) - Thursday, Feb. 18, 6 p.m.

The Pioneers are the defending state champions, and enter the State Tournament unbeaten in their last 39 games dating back to the 2015 regular season.

Sophomore forward Abigail Boreen (13-36-49) leads the Pioneers in scoring, while senior defender and Wisconsin commit Mekenzie Steffen (13-18-31) is a Ms. Hockey nominee. 

Staunch goaltending is the calling card for the Sabres, with senior and Providence commit Claire Minnerath between the pipes. Minnerath posted two shutouts in the Section 8AA playoffs, and finished the regular season ranked in the state’s top-10 in wins (15), goals against average (1.28), and save percentage (.941). 


No. 4 Maple Grove (Sec. 5AA, 20-5-2) vs. No. 5 Lakeville South (Sec. 1AA, 20-5-2) - Thursday, Feb. 18, 8 p.m.

In its first State Tournament appearance, the Crimson have a hot hand, winning their last four games by a combined score of 21-3. Junior forward and Minnesota commit Taylor Wente (27-27-54) has proven to be a force this postseason, scoring five goals in two Section 5AA playoff games. 

10 players have scored 10 or more points for the Cougars this season, led by senior forward Jenna Haeg (21-24-45). The Cougars edged Dodge County 3-2 in overtime in the Section 1AA finals to punch their ticket to State.

  • Section 3A Luverne (20-6-0) vs. (No. 1) Section 5A The Blake School (23-2-2) — 6:00 p.m.
  • (No. 5) Section 2A New Prague (17-9-1) vs. (No. 4) Section 7A Proctor/Hermantown (19-7-1) — 8:00 p.m.


Class AA - Feb. 18

  • Section 3AA Eastview (18-6-4) vs. (No. 2 seed) Section 6AA Edina (19-7-1) — 11:00 a.m.
