Class A preview: State’s top four teams set to battle

A look at the eight teams in the girls' Class A state tournament

The state’s top four ranked teams – Warroad, Breck, Mound Westonka and Proctor/Hermantown – head to St. Paul in search of the Class A girls’ hockey state championship. They will be joined by No. 6 Rochester Lourdes, No. 11 Fergus Falls, No. 13 St. Paul United and No. 20 Mankato/East Loyola.

Four teams – Breck, Proctor/Hermantown, St. Paul United and Warroad – are making return trips to the state tournament, and two teams – Breck and Warroad – have captured past state championships. Warroad  leads the way with nine past tournament appearances, followed by Breck with six, and Proctor/Hermantown and St. Paul United with four. Four teams – Breck, Fergus Falls, St. Paul United and Warroad – own all-time winning records at the state tournament.

Below is a look at the eight teams in the Class A state tournament.

Breck Mustangs
Record: 19-8-0

Best state finish: First (2012, 18)
Road to state (Section 5A wins): Totino-Grace 8-2, Minneapolis 7-0
Leading scorers: Olivia Mobley (28-31--59), Sadie Lindsay (26-23--49), Ally Qualley (13-27--40), Carly Beniek (10-27--37), Ava Lindsay (10-26--36), Ashley Halverson (10-12--22)
Goaltenders: Uma Corniea (8-3-0, 2.35, .924), Ally Frantzic (11-5-0, 2.68, .907)
Notes: Breck is 7-1 vs. Class A teams and 12-7 vs. Class AA teams • the Mustangs have scored five or more goals in 11 games this season • Breck is 3-1 vs. Class A state tournament teams • the Mustangs are 14-7 all-time at the state tournament • three Mustangs have committed to a Division I team – Sadie Lindsay (Minnetonka), Mobley (Quinnipiac), Qualley (Merrimack), Emily Zumwinkle (Minnesota).

Fergus Falls Otters
Record: 21-6-0

Best state finish: Fifth (2009)
Road to state (Section 6A wins): River Lakes 5-1, Alexandria
Leading scorers: Sophie Rausch (40-33--73), Ellie Andersen (21-25--46), Hallie Sheridan (9-20--29), Jade Zierden (10-18--28), Piper Andrews (8-14--22)
Goaltenders: Jadyn McKeever (11-6-0, 1.93, .929), Mady Eklund (10-0-0, 1.80, .867)
Notes: Fergus Falls is making its second state tournament appearance • nine Otters own double-digit point totals • Fergus Falls is 10-1 in 2019 • the Otters have not had back-to-back losses this season • Fergus Falls has allowed two or fewer goals in 19 games, including four shutouts.

Mankato East/Loyola Cougars
Record: 18-7-2

Best state finish: Seventh (2017)
Road to state (Section 3A wins): Luverne 5-3 OT, Mankato West 4-3

Mound Westonka White Hawks

Notes: The White Hawks are making their third appearance in the state tournament • the team posted the first undefeated regular season in Mound Westonka boys’ or girls’ program history • ties came to Hutchinson, Delano/Rockford (2), New Prague and Proctor/Hermantown • the White Hawks have allowed two or fewer goals in all but three games with eight shutouts • Mound Westonka has scored four or more goals in 15 games • the White Hawks are outscoring their opponents 113-33 on the season • Smith is a Senior Goalie of the Year finalist • Pioske is a Vermont commit.

Proctor/Hermantown Mirage
Record: 18-7-3

Best state finish: Fourth (2016, 18)
Road to state (Section 7A wins): Moose Lake 5-0, Hibbing/Chisholm 3-0, Duluth Marshall 3-1

Notes: Proctor/Hermantown is making its fifth state tournament appearance • the Mirage have allowed two or fewer goals in 16 games, including seven shutouts • Proctor/Hermantown is outscoring its opponents 115-58 • the Mirage are 2-0-0 in neutral site games this season  • 10 players own double-digit point totals • this is the 21st year of the Proctor/Hermantown program.

Rochester Lourdes Eagles

Warroad Warriors

Notes: The Warriors are making their 10th state tournament appearance • Warroad is 19-7 all-time at the state tournament • the lone tie on the year came to Roseau in the final regular season game • the Warriors have allowed two or fewer goals in all but 1 game, a 4-3 win over Minnetonka on Nov. 17 • Warroad has scored five or more goals in 14 games • the Warriors are outscoring their opponents 135-35 and own 14 shutouts • Kuntz led the state in wins, goals-against average and save percentage and shutouts in the regular season • Corneliusen led the state in goals and points • Kotlowski is a Ms. Hockey finalist • Kuntz is a Senior Goalie of the Year finalist •  two players have committed to a Division I team – Kotlowski (Wisconsin) and Kuntz (Ohio State).
