Minnesota natives Jordan Gross (Maple Grove) and Dylan Malmquist (Edina) both had hands in goals as Notre Dame advanced to the national championship game Saturday against Minnesota Duluth with a 4-3 win over Michigan on Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.

Gross, a senior defenseman, assisted on the Irish’s first two goals as they climbed beck from a 2-0 deficit. Then Malmquist, a junior winger, threaded a beautiful pass to a streaking Cal Burke who got behind the Michigan defense and was able to beat Wolverine goalie Hayden Lavigne for a 3-2 lead.

Notre Dame started off slow against the Wolverines who got goals from Tony Calderone and Dexter Dancs. The second tally came just 17 seconds into the second period when Dancs shoveled a shot towards the net that deflected off a Notre Dame defenseman into the back of the net.

Notre Dame’s Andrew Ogelvie scored a power-play goal at the 2:41 mark of the second period to make it a 2-1 game with assists going to Gross and Jake Evans. Evans then tied the game when he buried a one-timer on a pass from Gross.

Burke’s goal came early in the third, but Michigan tied it when Nick Pastujov scored on a rebound past Irish goalie Cale Morris.

It looked as the though the game would go into overtime when Cam Morrison skated wide down the left side and found Evans in front who tapped the game-winner under the outspread pads of Lavigne with just 3.7 seconds left.

Notre Dame will be making their second appearance in the national title game. They lost to Boston College 4-1 in 2008.
