COLLEGE HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Gopher Women Oust UMD; NCAA Semifinals Next

D1 Women

Minnesota upended No. 3 seed Minnesota-Duluth in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Championships, with Patti Marshall scoring the game-winner at the 7:54 mark of the third period.

Marshall’s goal, assisted by Kelly Pannek and Sarah Potomak, proved to be all the Golden Gophers would need to defeat the Bulldogs in a 1-0 final.

The Golden Gophers (26-7-5) will face second-seeded Clarkson in the semifinals, to be played on March 17 at 9 p.m. in St. Charles, Missouri.

D1 Men

Minnesota-Duluth (23-6-7)

The Bulldogs earned a spot in the semifinals of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference tournament.

Second-seeded Minnesota-Duluth defeated Miami (Ohio) 5-4 in overtime and 5-3, and will face third-seeded Western Michigan this weekend at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

St. Cloud State (16-19-1)

The Huskies drew the fifth seed in the NCHC tournament field, and were bumped by North Dakota twice for an early exit. The Huskies fell in game one 5-2 and lost 6-5 in overtime to end game two.

Minnesota (23-10-3)

After claiming their sixth straight Big Ten Conference regular season title, the Golden Gophers have earned a bye into the second round of the conference tournament.

The top-seeded Golden Gophers will face the winner of the game between Penn State and Michigan on March 17 at 8 p.m. at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. 

D3

WOMEN

St. Thomas (14-11-4) fell to No. 1 ranked and top-seeded Plattsburgh State in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Hockey Championships, ending the Tommies’ season.

Gustavus Adolphus advanced, edging Wisconsin-River Falls 3-2 in the quarterfinals. The Gusties (18-6-3) will face Adrian on March 17 in Adrian, Michigan.

MEN

The NCAA Division III men's tournament has been whittled down to eight teams, set to play quarterfinal games on Saturday, March 18. Among the remaining squads is eight-seeded Augsburg, which will face No. 3 seed St. Norbert in De Pere, Wis.
