COLLEGE HOCKEY ROUNDUP: UMD, Minnesota Women's Teams Advance to WCHA Final Face-Off

Bulldog, Gopher Men Still Ranked in Top Five

D1 Women

Minnesota-Duluth (24-5-5)

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 3 in the USCHO poll, swept St. Cloud State by scores of 5-0 and 6-2 in the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs.

Minnesota (25-6-5)

No. 5-rated Minnesota escaped with two wins in three games over Bemidji State. The Golden Gophers took game one 3-1, fell in game two 2-1, and edged the Beavers 3-2 in game three.

With Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota earning wins in the first round of the WCHA playoffs, those two teams advance to the WCHA Final Face-Off, where they will face each other on Saturday, Mar. 4 at Ridder Arena. Wisconsin and North Dakota are the other two teams remaining.

D1 Men

Minnesota-Duluth (20-5-7)

The Bulldogs played to a 4-3 win and a 3-3 tie with Miami (Ohio) over the weekend, with the Redhawks earning the extra point with a win in a 3-on-3 overtime session.

The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 3 in the United States College Hockey Online poll.

Minnesota (21-9-2)

Ranked No. 5 in the USCHO poll, the Golden Gophers split with Wisconsin in the "Border Battle" this weekend. The Badgers took game one 3-2 and the Gophers earned the win in game two by an identical 3-2 score.

St. Cloud State (15-16-1)

After a sweep of Miami (Ohio), the Huskies were swept themselves by the University of Denver by scores of 4-3 and 7-2. Despite the sweep, the Huskies are rated No. 19 in the USCHO poll.

Bemidji State (20-13-3)

The Beavers split with Minnesota State this weekend, winning 2-1 and losing 2-1. This marks the second consecutive split where the Beavers have won the first game and lost the second.

Minnesota State (19-11-4)

The Mavericks had their three-game winning streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to Bemidji State, but rebounded with a 2-1 win in game two.

MEN: ST. THOMAS, AUGSBURG ADVANCE TO MIAC TITLE GAME

The top two seeds in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference have advanced to the championship game on Saturday, with No. 2 seed Augsburg edging St. Mary’s 5-4 in overtime, and top-seeded St. Thomas slipping past Concordia 2-1.

St. Thomas’ Charlie Donlin was the hero in the win over the Cobbers, scoring a power play goal at the 11:29 mark of the third period on assists from Alex Trapp and Johnny Panvica, who also scored the game’s first goal. Goaltender Benjamin Meyers made 29 saves in the win for the Tommies.

Jeremy Johnson scored the lone goal of the game for the Cobbers. 

Nate Flynn scored the game-winner at 1:56 of overtime to lift Augsburg to its semifinal win over St. Mary’s, placing the Auggies in their second consecutive MIAC championship game. Trevor Stewart, Chris Nuth, Dylan Meier and Eric Brenk also added goals for the Auggies, who benefited from a 28-save performance from goaltender Nick Schmit.

Taylor Portner recorded two goals and an assist for the Cardinals, with Bob Kinne and Kyle Meeh tallying single goals.

WOMEN: UPSET-MINDED ST. THOMAS EDGES ITS WAY INTO MIAC FINALS

After thumping Hamline 6-1, No. 4 seed St. Thomas parlayed that momentum into an upset of top-seeded Gustavus in a 3-2 thriller on Saturday.

Rachel Werdin scored the game-winner for St. Thomas, capping a run of three unanswered goals for the Tommies and erasing a 2-0 deficit with goals coming from Becca Zarembinski and Anna Williams. Emily Gustafson and Erica Power scored the first two goals of the game for the Gusties.

In the other semifinal, Augsburg scored three straight goals to down Concordia 3-1, with Callen Naasz scored the eventual game-winning goal and adding an insurance goal in the third period. Megan Robertson added a goal for Augsburg, and Amanda Flemming scored the Cobbers’ lone goal.

The Tommies and the Auggies will meet on Saturday, Mar. 4 in the MIAC finals.
