COLLEGE HOCKEY ROUNDUP: No. 2 UMD Stretches Unbeaten Streak to Nine Games

D1 Men

Minnesota-Duluth (19-5-6)

The Bulldogs were edged out of the United States College Hockey Online poll’s top spot by Denver, but Minnesota-Duluth drops only slightly to No. 2 nationally.

Over the weekend, the Bulldogs managed a 2-1 win and a 2-2 tie on a trip to Colorado College, with the tie being won in a shootout by the Bulldogs.

Minnesota (20-8-2)

As the visitors in University Park, the Golden Gophers swept host Penn State by scores of 6-3 and 4-3, with the second win coming in overtime. The Golden Gophers are currently ranked No. 4 in the USCHO poll.

Bemidji State (19-12-3)

The Beavers had a three-game winning streak snapped in a 5-2 loss to Alabama-Huntsville, ending the weekend series with a split after the Beavers took game on 3-2 over the Chargers.

Minnesota State (18-10-4)

Playing host to Northern Michigan, the Mavericks swept the Wildcats 5-3 and 7-4. The wins extend the Mavericks’ winning streak to three games.

St. Cloud State (15-14-1)

After a split with North Dakota, the Huskies swept Miami (Ohio) by scores of 4-2 and 3-1. Up next for the Huskies will be a series on the road against No. 1 ranked Denver.

D1 Women

Minnesota-Duluth (22-5-5)

The highest-rated team from the State of Hockey in the USCHO women’s poll at No. 2, the Bulldogs rebounded from its series with No. 1 Wisconsin with a sweep of St. Cloud State. The Bulldogs have lost just twice in their last 12 games.

Minnesota (23-5-5)

The No. 4-ranked Golden Gophers emerged from its series with top-ranked Wisconsin with a pair of ties, drawing with the Badgers 1-1 and 0-0 at Ridder Arena.

Bemidji State (11-18-3)

The Beavers split with Minnesota State over the weekend, winning game one 6-1 and falling in game two 3-1. The loss marks the third time in five games that the Beavers have been beaten.

St. Cloud State (9-21-4)

The Huskies were swept over the weekend by No. 2 ranked Minnesota-Duluth by scores of 2-1 and 4-1. The sweep extends the Huskies’ losing streak to three consecutive games.

Minnesota State (7-24-4)

The Mavericks earned a split with Bemidji State this weekend, losing game one 6-1 and taking game two 3-1. The Mavericks will face top-ranked Wisconsin in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinals.

D3 Men

Augsburg (15-4-6)

Ranked No. 11 in the latest USCHO poll, the Auggies split with St. John’s, taking game one 5-1 and falling 4-2 in game two.

Entering the Minnesota Interscholastic Athletic Conference playoffs, Augsburg will have a bye in the quarterfinals.

St. Thomas (13-7-5)

The Tommies swept St. Olaf over the weekend, winning the first game in overtime 4-3 and blanking the Oles in the second game 6-0. Johnny Panvica scored the game-winner in the series’ first game.

St. Mary’s (13-9-3)

Having not played for nearly two weeks, the Cardinals begin the MIAC playoffs with a game against Augsburg on Feb. 25.

Concordia (13-10-2)

The Cobbers split on the road against Bethel over the weekend, winning Friday’s game 6-2 and losing on Saturday 4-3.

Hamline (10-9-6)

A 3-1 loss and a 4-4 tie against Gustavus were the results of the Pipers’ final series of the regular season. Up next for the Pipers will be the MIAC quarterfinals, where they will face Concordia.

D3 Women

Gustavus (17-5-3)

The MIAC regular season champions swept Hamline 3-0 and 2-1 over the weekend, solidifying their top seed in the upcoming MIAC playoffs. The Gusties are 11-0-2 in their last 13 games.

Augsburg (18-7-0)

The Auggies ended the season on a high note, thumping St. Benedict 6-1 and 3-0. The Auggies enter the postseason having won five of their last six games.

Concordia (14-8-3)

In a tale of two games, the Cobbers took a 5-2 loss in game one of the weekend’s series against Bethel before trouncing the Royals 7-3 in game two.

St. Thomas (11-10-4)

The Tommies ended the regular season with a 1-1 tie and a 8-2 win over St. Olaf. In the MIAC quarterfinals, the Tommies will face Hamline.

Hamline (12-12-1)

The Pipers come limping into the postseason, having lost five of their last six games. Over the weekend the Pipers lost twice to Gustavus, losing game one 3-0 and game two 2-1.
