COLLEGE HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Bemidji State Bounces Back

Beavers Sweep Michigan Tech; Gophers, Bulldogs Keep Winning

D1 Men

Minnesota-Duluth (18-5-5)

The Bulldogs enter this week once again ranked as the No. 1 team in the country according to the United States College Hockey Online poll.

The top-ranked Bulldogs tied Nebraska-Omaha 2-2 in game one of the weekend (Bulldogs won in shootout), and earned the shutout in a 5-0 victory in game two.

Minnesota (17-7-2)

The No. 5-rated Golden Gophers rolled to a pair of victories over Penn State at Mariucci Arena, defeating the No. 10 Nittany Lions 5-1 and 5-2.

Bemidji State (18-11-3)

Coming in at No. 21, the Beavers rebounded from two losses at the North Star College Cup with a sweep of Michigan Tech by scores of 4-2 and 3-0.

St. Cloud State (13-14-1)

A trip to Grand Forks yielded a split for the No. 22 Huskies, taking game one 3-1 and falling in game two 2-1. The Huskies have lost three of their last five games.

Minnesota State (16-10-4)

The Mavericks split with Alaska-Anchorage over the weekend, surrendering to the home team 4-3 and taking the second game 5-0. Aaron Nelson made 13 saves to earn the shutout in game two.

D1 Women

Minnesota-Duluth (20-4-4)

Ranked as the highest Minnesota school in the USCHO women’s poll, the No. 2 Bulldogs swept North Dakota over the weekend by scores of 2-0 and 2-1.

Minnesota (21-5-3)

The No. 5 Golden Gophers continued their winning streak with a sweep of Minnesota State, defeating the Mavericks 5-0 and 5-3. Minnesota has won four consecutive games, and has not lost since Jan. 14.

Bemidji State (9-16-3)

Winless since Jan. 14, the Beavers fell to No. 1 Wisconsin 6-1 and 4-2 at home over the weekend.

St. Cloud State (8-18-4)

The Huskies managed a win and a tie against Ohio State this weekend, taking game one 3-1 and knotting game two 2-2.

Minnesota State (6-22-3)

Minnesota State fell to No. 5 Minnesota 5-0 and 5-3 over the weekend, and the Mavericks will take their nine-game winless streak on the road against Ohio State in their next series.

D3 Men

Augsburg (13-3-5)

Ranked No. 10 in the USCHO poll, Augsburg is in the midst of an interesting streak.

The Auggies have tied three consecutive games, knotting Hamline twice over the weekend with scores of 4-4 and 2-2.

St. Thomas (11-6-4)

The No. 15 Tommies were edged by Concordia (Minn.) 5-4 in overtime in the first game of the weekend series, but rebounded with a resounding 5-0 win in game two. Benjamin Myers made 20 saves to pick up the shutout for the Tommies.

St. Mary’s (12-8-3)

The Cardinals swept Gustavus Adolphus by scores of 3-1 and 2-0 over the weekend, the team’s first victories since Jan. 20.

Concordia (12-8-1)

A 5-4 overtime win and a 5-0 loss to St. Thomas represented two sides to the Cobbers, who will look to bounce back in next weekend’s series against St. Olaf in Moorhead.

Zach Doerring scored the game-winner in the extra session of game one against the Tommies.

St. John’s (10-8-3)

The Johnnies had a bye this weekend, and will be back in action when hosting St. Mary’s on Feb. 10 and Feb. 11.

D3 Women

Augsburg (15-6-0)

Augsburg is the first team in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to qualify for the league’s playoffs, helped in part by a sweep of Hamline over the weekend by scores of 7-2 and 2-1.

Gustavus Adolphus (13-5-3)

The Gusties continue to be one of the hottest teams in the state, stretching their unbeaten streak to nine games with a sweep of St. Mary’s this weekend. The Gusties did not allow a goal in the two games, shutting out the Cardinals 2-0 and 4-0.

Concordia (12-7-2)

The Cobbers split with St. Thomas in Moorhead, taking a 1-0 loss in game one and edging the Tommies for a 5-4 victory in game two.

Hamline (11-9-1)

Back-to-back losses to Augsburg halted the Pipers’ five-game winning streak, which the Pipers will look to resurrect in this coming weekend’s series against St. Catherine.

St. Thomas (8-9-3)

The Tommies took game one against Concordia 1-0 over the weekend before having a comeback attempt fall short in game two’s 5-4 loss.
