COLLEGE HOCKEY ROUNDUP: UMD Wins North Star College Cup, Returns to No. 1

D1 Men

Minnesota-Duluth (17-5-4)

The Bulldogs are back at the top of the United States College Hockey Online poll, garnering 46 of the 50 possible votes.

The Bulldogs took the North Star College Cup over the weekend, edging Minnesota 3-2 and slipping past St. Cloud State in overtime 2-1 on Kyle Osterberg’s game-winner.

Minnesota (15-7-2)

Coming in at No. 7 nationally, the Golden Gophers took third as the host team of the North Star College Cup, falling to No. 1 Minnesota-Duluth 3-2 on Friday before shutting out Bemdji State 4-0 on Saturday.

St. Cloud State (12-13-1)

A 2-1 win over Bemidji State put the Huskies in the North Star College Cup finals, where they lost 2-1 to Minnesota-Duluth. Up next for the Huskies is a trip to Grand Forks for a series against No. 13 North Dakota.

Bemidji State (16-11-3)

The Beavers will look to shake off a pair of losses this weekend in St. Paul against St. Cloud State and Minnesota by hosting Michigan Tech this weekend.

Minnesota State (15-9-4)

The Mavericks earned a pair of wins over the weekend, beating Lake Superior State 4-2 and edging the Lakers 3-2 in a three-on-three overtime in game two.

D1 Women

Minnesota-Duluth (18-4-4)

The Bulldogs enter the week at No. 2 in the USCHO poll, hot off a sweep of Ohio State this weekend. The Bulldogs thumped the Buckeyes 6-1 and 3-0 in the two games.

Minnesota (19-5-3)

Ranked No. 4, the Golden Gophers swept past St. Cloud State this weekend by scores of 2-1 and 5-0. Goaltender Sidney Peters made 12 saves to earn the shutout in game two.

Bemidji State (9-14-3)

A home-and-away series against No. 11 North Dakota ended in two losses for the Beavers, falling 3-1 in the first game and losing in a shootout in game two.

St. Cloud State (7-18-3)

Hosting No. 4 ranked Minnesota yielded two losses for the Huskies, dropping game one 2-1 and losing game two by a 5-0 score.

Minnesota State (6-20-3)

The Mavericks took their lumps against Wisconsin, rated as the nation’s top team. The Mavericks took losses of 5-0 and 6-1 against the Badgers.

D3 Men

Augsburg (13-3-3)

The Auggies are the highest ranked Minnesota school in the United States College Hockey Online poll, and have gone unbeaten in their last four games.

Over the weekend the Auggies edged St. Mary’s 4-3 and tied the Cardinals 5-5 in game two.

St. Thomas (10-5-4)

The Tommies emerged form the weekend series against St. John’s with a pair of victories, taking the first game 2-0 and the second game 5-2.

Concordia (11-7-1)

After a four-game winless streak, the Cobbers swept Gustavus Adolphus over the weekend, beating the Gusties 4-0 and 3-2 in overtime. The Cobbers will face Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader St. Thomas this coming weekend.

Hamline (10-8-3)

Consecutive wins over Bethel by scores of 5-3 and 3-2 (OT) put the Pipers over the .500 mark, and the team will look to continue that success against Augsburg in its next series this weekend.

St. Mary’s (10-8-3)

The Cardinals lost to Augsburg 4-3 and tied the Auggies 5-5 over the weekend, giving the Cardinals just one win in their last five games.

Augsburg (13-6-0)

Ranked No. 10 nationally in the USCHO poll, the Auggies split with St. Mary’s over the weekend, winning game one 5-1 and faltering in game two 2-1.

Gustavus Adolphus (11-5-3)

The Gusties are unbeaten in their last seven games, going 5-0-2 while posting three shutouts along the way. Over the weekend, the Gusties blanked Concordia 5-0 and tied the Cobbers 2-2 in the second game.

Hamline (11-7-1)

The Pipers have won five consecutive games, including a weekend sweep of Bethel by scores of 4-1 and 3-2. The Pipers will face No. 10 rated Augsburg in their next series.

Concordia (11-6-2)

A 5-0 loss and a 2-2 tie with Gustavus stretches the Cobbers’ winless streak to three games, it’s longest such stretch of the season.

St. Thomas (7-8-3)

The Tommies swept the College of St. Benedict over the weekend, winning game one 3-2 and taking game two 4-3 in overtime. Emily Michaelson scored the game-winner in the second game of the series.
