Sometimes, a team’s penalty killing unit is the best example of a squad’s grit.

“That was a lot of heart,” Breck head coach Ronda Engelhardt said after her Mustangs edged St. Paul United 4-2 on Tuesday night, a win that included a successful four-minute penalty kill. I thought the kids worked hard,” Engelhardt added.

Junior forward Grace Zumwinkle scored three goals, and senior Amanda Navratil added a goal and an assist to lead the Mustangs, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A in the latest coaches’ poll.

Senior goaltender and Clarkson commit Jenna Brenneman made 34 saves in the win.

Junior forward Joie Phelps and senior forward Sena Hanson each scored a goal for St. Paul United (18-3-1).

The Mustangs (18-3-0) have the unusual luxury of two Division I goaltenders, with Vermont commit Sydney Scobee the other goalie in the rotation.

“I feel very lucky, that’s for sure,” Engelhardt said with a laugh. "Sometimes it’s hard to look down and see one of them on the bench not playing, because they both deserve to be playing every game,” Engelhardt continued.

Zumwinkle, a junior, is committed to Minnesota, her head coach and assistant coach Bethany Brausen’s alma mater.

Even with a commitment to one of the premier women’s hockey programs in the country, she celebrates as though she’s never seen a scholarship offer.

“I just try to keep humble,” Zumwinkle said of her low-key demeanor after scoring a goal. “Never too high or too low.”

Grace has her older sister, senior defender and Middlebury commit Anna, to keep her ego in check.

“My sister and I are the best of friends,” Grace said. “She motivates me to work hard and train hard every day.”
