Benilde-St. Margaret’s head coach Ken Pauly does not sound like the coach of an undefeated team.

Pauly’s Red Knights (13-0-1) edged St. Thomas Academy 5-3 on Tuesday night at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center to run their unbeaten streak to 14 games, but Pauly admitted that he was not completely happy with the way the Red Knights have won.

“I’m probably the unhappiest undefeated coach there is,” Pauly said. “If we stay five-on-five and play disciplined, we’re going to win that game going away,” Pauly added, alluding to the six penalties the Red Knights took during the game.

The Cadets (7-3-3) managed to score on two of their power play chances, with sophomore forward Peyton Matsui netting both goals. Freshman forward Rob Christy also scored for the Cadets, ranked No. 14 in the latest Class 2A coaches’ poll.

Senior forward Jacob Holmers scored twice for the No. 1-ranked Red Knights, and senior forward Cade Gleekel, senior forward Auggie Moore and junior forward Luke Horton all scored one goal each.

Horton’s goal came at the 11:57 mark of the second period, where he side-stepped a St. Thomas Academy defender and launched a rocket backhand shot that beat Cadets’ goaltender Vinny Capezza top-shelf.

Junior goaltender Ryan Bischel made 30 saves in the victory for the Red Knights.

The Red Knights have seven players that have scored 11 or more points this season, concrete evidence that there is depth throughout the lineup.

“I don’t think we’re playing particularly well, and we’re still finding ways to win,” Pauly said of his team’s balanced scoring.

Pauly added that Tuesday night’s post-game meeting may help his Red Knights correct some of their mistakes as the season continues.

“We had a little heart-to-heart after this one,” Pauly said. “Hopefully we can figure it out.”
