It took more than 12 years for Phil Housley to get the call from the Hockey Hall of Fame, but on Nov. 9, the South St. Paul native finally received the sport’s highest individual honor, becoming one of seven new members inducted into the Hall in Toronto.

Considered one of the best best offensive defensemen in National Hockey League history, Housley joined Chris Pronger, Sergei Fedorov, Nicklas Lidstrom, Angela Ruggiero, Bill Hay and Peter Karmanos in the Hall of Fame’s class of 2015.

Housley retired in 2004 with 338 goals, 894 assists and 1,232 points in 1,495 regular-season games, and is still the second-highest scoring American-born player in league history. He joins Moose Goheen and Frank Brimsek as the only Minnesotans inducted into the Hall. Housley, who switched to defense in high school under the guidance of head coach Doug Woog, never spent a day in the minors in a 21-year professional career. Housley also made a big impact on the international stage, and was part of Team USA's silver medal team at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Prior to the induction ceremony, Housley was asked by NHL Network of what he is most proud. “Tonight. The induction tonight. I’ve been looking forward to this day,” said Housley, currently an assistant coach with the Nashville Predators. “This is the pinnacle of the industry. I couldn’t be more proud and I’m very honored and really looking forward to it.”
