Andover (27-3-0) defeated Edina (22-5-2) 2-1 on the strength of two third period goals Friday night. 

Sophomore forward Maya Engler got the game-winning goal with 3:54 remaining to give Andover its first lead.

“I tried to get as close to the middle as I could,” Engler said of her goal. 

The Huskies tied it with a power-play goal in the third period, the third goal of the season by sophomore forward Ella Thoreson, as she tipped in sophomore defender Mackenzie Jones’ shot from the point. 

“We unfortunately had a couple tough plays that led to two goals,” Edina head coach Sami Cowger said. 

Edina got a late power play and several big whacks at senior goaltender Courtney Stagman, who finished with 19 saves for the Huskies.

“Sometimes we take late penalties and it becomes very intense,” Stagman said.  

It was a scoreless, but physical first period featuring two penalties a side. 

Edina took the lead with 6:07 to go in the second period on a power play goal by senior forward Ellie Chapman, the Hornets ninth goal on the advantage in four postseason games.

Edina goaltender Uma Corniea (a Senior Goalie of the Year finalist) had 29 saves in the game and did not allow a goal until Andover’s 25th shot of the night.

Gentry Academy (26-2-0) knocked off top seed Minnetonka (26-3-0) 2-1 in overtime in the Friday nightcap in St. Paul. 

Senior forward Ellie Sarauer scored her 11th goal of the season at the 3:00 mark of overtime to send the Stars to the Class AA Championship game Saturday night. 

“With our 12 seniors I felt like we were destined to make the [championship],” Gentry senior forward Campbell Heger said. 

Gentry had to battle back after Minnetonka opened the scoring on junior forward Molly Ryan’s eighth goal of the season two minutes into the game. 

“In the first period they pushed us around quite a bit,” Gentry head coach Billy Hengen said. 

The Stars mounted pressure in a second period where they outshot Minnetonka 9-3. 

Senior forward Alexa Hanrahan tied the game at 1-1 by finishing off a well-executed line rush.

“Right before I got the puck, I knew what move I was going to do,” Hanrahan said. 

Minnetonka will play Lake Conference rival Edina in the Class AA Third Place Game at 11 a.m. Saturday at the X. 

“This loss tonight does not define this group and what they accomplished,” Minnetonka head coach Tracy Cassano said. 

Gentry Academy advances to play Andover in the Class AA Championship game at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center.
