Randolph named head coach at STA

Mike Randolph coached at Duluth East for 32 years, turning it into a perennial northern power. His teams made 18 state tournaments, won two titles and finished second six times.

Third-winningest coach in Minnesota high school history was inducted into Coaches' Hall of Fame in 2018


Randolph was an assistant with the Cadets in 2021.

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn., May 3, 2022 – Saint Thomas Academy announced today that Mike Randolph, the third-most winningest high school hockey coach in Minnesota history, has been named its new head hockey coach. Randolph has coached at the high school and collegiate levels for more than 45 years, amassing 658 career wins and earning a place in the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

"We are very excited to have Coach Randolph as our next head coach," said Reed Hornung, activities and athletic director at Saint Thomas Academy. "With 34 years as a successful head coach, he will bring fantastic experience to our program. I look forward to working with him to build men of character both on and off the ice."

Randolph said, "I haven't been this excited in 32 years! I am honored to be the next Saint Thomas Academy Hockey Coach!"

Prior to joining Cadet Hockey as an assistant coach in 2021, Randolph was head coach at Duluth East for 32 years, leading the Greyhounds to the state tournament 18 times, earning the championship twice, runner-up 6 times, third place 5 times and fifth place 3 times. In addition to his Hall of Fame honor, Randolph was the Class AA Coach of the Year in 2012-2013. Prior to Duluth East, Randolph coached at Duluth Cathedral, Duluth Denfeld, University of Minnesota-Duluth and the College of St. Scholastica.

Randolph's playing career included the 1976 US Olympic Team, four years in the minors, two years in the British Columbia major juniors and four years for Duluth Cathedral High School.

Randolph has been married 48 years to his wife Ginny. Together, they have 4 children and 5 grandchildren with 2 more on the way.
