Edina's Jungels named Ms. Hockey; Northfield's Malecha is Goalie of the Year

Vivian Jungels emerged from a talented field of five finalists to win the Ms. Hockey Award Sunday, Feb. 27.

The award is given to the state's top female senior player. Jungels, a defenseman for Edina, is the school's all-time leader in assists and also the all-time points leader for a defenseman. 

Other finalists included Lakeville South's Claire Enright, Danielle Burgen from Chisago Lakes, Madison Kaiser from Holy Family and Sloane Matthews from Wayzata.

Maggie Malecha was voted Senior Goalie of the Year. The Northfield senior led her team to the Class AA tourney and will continue her career at the University of St. Thomas. Other finalists were Leah Bosch of Hopkins/Park, Hannah Fritz of Cretin-Derham Hall, Abby Pajari of Proctor/Hermantown and Kendra Nordick of Warroad.

The awards are presented by Let's Play Hockey and sponsored by the Minnesota Wild, the Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association, and Tradition Companies. 

The awards are voted on by a large panel of high school and college coaches.

The Class AA Coach of the Year was awarded to Tim Morris of Lakeville South. The Class A Coach of the Year was awarded to Orono's Sean Fish.

The Class AA Assistant Coach of the Year Award was given to Bob Sherry of Burnsville. The Class A Assistant Coach of the Year Award was given to Jim Kurtz of Mound Westonka.

Claire Goldsmith of Mound Westonka received the Brano Stankovsky Award. The award is in honor of the former Blake High School coach and is awarded to an individual who is heavily committed to the Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association and the advancement of girls hockey in the state of Minnesota.
