It's section championship time in Minnesota. Teams across the State of Hockey are taking that final step to make it to The Tourney. While this is Moorhead's 18th straight section championship game, it's the first ever for the one team that stands in the way of the spuds making another trip to St. Paul. Both St. Michael-Albertville and Moorhead will make the long drive to Bemidji for the Section 8AA final. But only one team will get to continue their journey.
The regular season is over.
And as happens in chasing a dream, the team had its ups and downs. But ultimately The Spuds ended up securing a number one seed in their section once again. Which is part of the process, but only part of the goal. For this community, the journey is just beginning. While the team still has three games to get there, their final destination still awaits.
Few teams in Minnesota travel as far and as much as the Moorhead Spuds. They routinely make 8-hour round trips in one night to play a single game of hockey. Life on the road for players, coaches and families is tough, but just a part of living in Northern Minnesota.
Hockey Day Minnesota, the day the entire state stops and celebrates our game. We celebrate its roots, its traditions and the memories and connections the game of hockey has made. This year, the Moorhead Spuds play in the feature game, outdoors at St. Cloud's Lake George. And whiles it's only one game on the schedule to a larger goal, Hockey Day Minnesota will be a date on the calendar theses Spuds will remember forever.
As the Spuds continue their journey to return to the state tournament, it is the community that supports them and has helped in their development as both great athletes and outstanding young men. The time and effort that goes into building a top program often goes unseen as everyone embraces their role, asking for nothing more than hard work in return.
