Mustangs rout Marshall in State Tournament opener

St. Paul, MN - The #2 seed Breck Mustangs made their return to the State Tournament for the first time since 2012 when they captured the Class A title and faced the Marshall Tigers.  The Mustangs picked up where they left off and overwhelmed the Tigers in a 9-2 quarterfinal win.

The Tigers (17-11-0),  who were making their first appearance since 2008 and third overall entered the tournament off an emotional 2-1 overtime Section 3A win over Mankato West, had a quick jump in the first period surprising the Mustangs but it did not last long.

Breck settled in and seized control of the first period.  A penalty at 12:44 by the Tiger’s Kaitlyn Timm opened the door for the Breck power play.  The Mustangs wasted little time as Carly Beniek scored from Olivia Mobley and Katherine Solohub at 13:09.

Mobley showed her speed 2:38 later as she raced by the Tiger defense and froze Tiger goaltender Emma Klenken for the backhanded breakaway goa and the 2-0 lead.  The Mustangs (17-10-1) outshot the Tigers 21-4 in the first period.

Breck continued their run in the second period. As a penalty to Ally Qualley expired that ended a four-on-four situation, Mobley wasted little time on the power play as she scored her second of the game by walking from the right boards to the goalmouth area and slipping the puck past Klenken for the 3-0 lead. Mobley ended with a four point effort as she assisted on two other Breck goals.

Lucy McGlynn got into the scoring mix as she put a rebound home off a save by Klenken.  The shot originated from the left point and McGlynn fought off the defender in front of the goal mouth area for the 4-0 lead.

Marshall’s Sydney Mauch got her team on the board in the third period and she was joined by Courtney Mauch who added a goal in the effort as well.

Beniek’s second of the game was followed up by goals from  Emily Zumwinkle, and and Gabby Billing set up a running time third period as the Mustangs had outshot the Tigers 42-9 through two periods of play and a 7-0 lead.

The Mustangs fired an astounding 100 shots at the Marshall net with 55 hitting the target.  Their puck possession and skill was evident throughout the game while the Tigers delivered a steady job of containing the explosive Mustangs.

Beiniek, McGlynn, and Mobley each had two goals and Sadie Lindsay added two assists in the winning effort.

Both teams exchanged goals in the third period.  The Mustangs moved forward to the semi-finals on Friday against the winner of the Red Wing and Hermantown/Proctor game.  Marshall will head to the consolation round on Thursday.
