Jett Jungels scores in the extra session to help No. 3 Edina edge No. 5 White Bear Lake 4-3.

EDINA, MINN. – Edina erased the zero in White Bear Lake’s loss column Thursday night in front of an energetic crowd at Braemar Ice Arena. It took an overtime goal by Jett Jungels for the third-ranked Hornets to take down the No. 5 Bears 4-3.

The loss dropped White Bear Lake to 8-1-2, while Edina moved to 12-1.

Jungels scored the overtime winner at 5:10 of the extra frame. The lefthanded forward broke through the White Bear Lake defense and skated wide, from left-to-right, before slipping a backhand between the right post and the outstretched pad of Bears goaltender Evan Foss.

Foss forced overtime with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, when he denied Sammy Walker his hat trick goal on a breakaway.

Four minutes before Foss’ huge save, WBL's Blake Meister scored the game-tying goal on a snipe from the right circle.

After a sluggish first period in which it was outshot 14-5 and out-scored 1-0 by White Bear Lake, Edina found its energy in the first intermission and used it to score three quick goals in the second period.

Defenseman Mason Reiners tied the game 1-1, and then Walker showed why he is considered one of the best players in the state, scoring consecutive goals – his 13th and 14th of the season – less than three minutes apart to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead.

On its heels during Edina’s surge, White Bear Lake made sure the game didn’t get away by scoring a late second-period goal to make it a 3-2 game at the second intermission.

The Bears were the aggressor in the first period and had the Hornets backpedaling. Connor McMutry put White Bear Lake on top 1-0 with a tip-in on Austin Carroll's shot from the point on a power play.

White Bear Lake is the sixth top-10 ranked Class AA team from the Let’s Play Hockey poll that Edina has played in 13 games. The Hornets also have wins over No. 6 Holy Family (7-0 score), No. 7 Centennial (5-2), No. 8 Cretin-Derham Hall (5-2) and No. 10 Eden Prairie (7-1). The Hornets’ only loss in those six games was to No. 1 Minnetonka.

For the Hornets, it was only the second time all season they scored less than five goals. The other time came in that loss to the Skippers, 5-2 on Dec. 26, at Ridder Arena in the Schwan’s Cup.
Edina was White Bear Lake’s third ranked opponent. The previous two games both ended in a tie – 1-1 with No. 4 Duluth East and 3-3 with No. 8 Cretin-Derham Hall.
