Gopher Women Score Two Wins Over Bemidji State

D1 Men

Minnesota Duluth (1-2-1)

The Bulldogs struggled to find the back of the net over the weekend against goaltender Michael Bitzer and Bemidji State, losing 5-2 on Friday and tying the Beavers 0-0 on Saturday. In Friday night’s game, UMD allowed four BSU goals on just eight shots in the third period, en route to the 5-2 loss. Blake Young and Karson Kuhlman scored for Minnesota Duluth. On Saturday, Bulldog goaltender Nick Deery stopped 27 of 27 Bemidji State shots.

St. Cloud State (3-0-0)

St. Cloud State remained unbeaten with two wins over Alaska, 6-3 on Friday and 5-4 in overtime on Saturday. In the series finale, Nick Poehling scored the game-winner at the 2:06 mark. On Friday, four third-period goals erased a 3-2 deficit and gave the host Huskies a 6-3 win. Nick Poehling scored twice, as did Jimmy Schuldt, who registered the game-winning goal during a 4-on-3 power play in the third period.

Minnesota (2-2-0)

The Gophers split with Penn State over the weekend, losing 3-1 on Friday before rebounding with an impressive 6-3 victory on Sunday. In the rematch, Brannon McManus scored his first three collegiate goals in the third period. Tommy Novak had three assists for host Minnesota. Eric Schierhorn made 23 saves and Ryan Norman scored for the Gophers in the series-opening 3-1 loss at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

Minnesota State (2-1-0)

The Mavericks had perhaps the most significant weekend performance of the Minnesota D1 teams, sweeping No. 2 ranked Boston University 6-3 and 3-0. Minnesota State completed the sweep behind a 26-save shutout by junior Jason Pawloski on Saturday. Nicholas Rivera and C.J. Suess scored rebound goals in the second period and Marc Michaelis added a goal in the third. On Friday, MSU peppered BU goaltender and Lakeville native Jake Oettinger with 45 shots and converted two of four power plays in the 6-3 win. Daniel Brickley notched a goal and three assists for the Mavericks.

Bemidji State (1-0-1)

Bemidji State roared back to defeat the Bulldogs 5-2 on Friday, before tying UMD 0-0 in Saturday’s series finale. In game one, goaltender Michael Bitzer stopped 27 of 29 shots while Gerry Fitzgerald tallied a goal and two assists for the Beavers. Justin Bandy scored the game-winning goal at the 5:51 mark of the final period, putting Bemidji State ahead 3-2. On Saturday, Bitzer again stood tall, turning aside 45 UMD shots.

D1 Women

Minnesota Duluth (2-4-0)

UMD dropped a pair of games to host Ohio State, 2-0 and 4-3. Jessica Convery made 16 saves in Friday's defeat and 28 on Saturday. In the series finale, the Bulldogs led 2-1 after one period but squandered the lead in the second period and lost 4-3. Naomi Rogge scored twice, including late in the third period with an extra attacker on the ice, but Ohio State held on for the win. Sydney Brodt tallied 1-1-2 in the game.

Minnesota (3-2-1)

The Golden Gophers swept Bemidji State 3-1 and 4-3 in OT over the weekend. On Friday, Cara Piazza's goal at 2:37 of the third period proved to be the game-winner. Grace Zumwinkle started the scoring early in the first period and Taylor Wente added an empty-netter. Minnesota's Sidney Peters stopped 27 of 28 shots in the win. On Saturday, Sydney Baldwin scored at 1:04 of OT to give Minnesota the sweep.

Bemidji State (1-4-1)

The Beavers battled but dropped a pair of games to Minnesota, getting outscored 7-4 in the two contests. Abby Haluska scored Bemidji State's lone goal in game one. In Saturday's series finale, Summer Thibodeau, Mak Langei and Emma Terres scored for BSU.

Minnesota State (1-4-1)

Minnesota State was swept by No. 1 Wisconsin, 3-2 and 3-1. On Friday, MSU opened up a one-goal advantage on goals by Megan Hinze and Lindsey Coleman, but UW stormed back with two goals in the third to secure the win. Saturday's tilt was less competitive, as the Badgers outscored Minnesota State 3-1 and outshot the hosts 34-16. Kathryn Bidulka made 31 saves in defeat.

St. Cloud State (1-3-0)

St. Cloud State swept the Minnesota Whitecaps in two, 2-1 exhibition contests in St. Cloud. Alyssa Erickson scored two goals and added an assist in the two games.
