COLLEGE HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Mavericks Extend Winning Streak With Sweep of Alabama-Huntsville

Concordia Stays Hot With Wins Over Wis.-Superior and Wis.-River Falls

D1 Men

Minnesota-Duluth (12-4-4)

The Bulldogs open this week’s United States College Hockey Online poll at No. 3, the highest of the Minnesota schools.

Hosting Colorado College over the weekend yielded a 2-2 tie and a 2-1 loss for the Bulldogs.

Minnesota (11-5-2)

The No. 9-rated Golden Gophers have not played since sweeping Mercyhurst and Massachusetts over New Year’s weekend in the 26th Annual Mariucci Classic.

The next set of games for Minnesota will be a series against Michigan on Jan. 13 and Jan. 14.

Bemidji State (15-8-3)

The Beavers are coming off a series split with Bowling Green, winning game one 2-1 and falling in game two 4-2. The Beavers are currently ranked No. 17 in the USCHO poll. 

Minnesota State (13-7-2)

A 3-0 and 3-2 sweep of Alabama-Huntsville gives the Mavericks three consecutive wins, propelling the Mavericks to the No. 18 ranking in the USCHO poll.

St. Cloud State (9-10-1)

Being swept by Miami (Ohio) starts the new year off with two losses for the Huskies, who find themselves ranked No. 24. The Huskies will look to rebound with an upcoming series with No. 3 Minnesota-Duluth.

D1 Women

Minnesota (16-3-2)

The No. 2 ranked Golden Gophers edged Minnesota State 5-3 on Jan. 8 in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game, and will re-enter their typical schedule with a series on the road against Minnesota-Duluth.

Minnesota-Duluth (13-4-3)

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 4, will begin the second half of their season in a series against No. 2 Minnesota on Jan. 13 and Jan. 14. In an exhibition game against the Minnesota Whitecaps on Jan. 7, the Bulldogs fell 5-2.

Bemidji State (8-11-1)

The Beavers kick off 2017 with a series against Ohio State on Jan. 13 and Jan. 14, on the road in Columbus.

St. Cloud State (6-14-2)

The Huskies thumped Colgate 7-4 in the weekend’s series opener, then tied the Raiders 0-0 in game two. Up next for the Huskies will be a trip to Madison to face top-ranked Wisconsin this coming weekend.

Minnesota State (6-15-2)

A 5-3 loss to Minnesota in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game started the new year for the Mavericks, who host North Dakota this coming weekend.

D3 Men

Augsburg (9-2-2)

The Auggies come into the week ranked No. 11 in the country by the United States College Hockey Online poll, coming off a 5-5 tie and a 4-2 win over Bethel over the weekend.

Concordia (9-4-0)

The Cobbers continue their winning streak into the new year, sweeping Wisconsin-Superior and Wisconsin-River Falls by scores of 3-2 and 2-1. The victories extended the Concordia winning streak to five games dating back to Dec. 9.

St. Thomas (7-4-3)

The Tommies edged St. Mary’s 6-5 in overtime, then fell to the Cardinals 2-1 in the second game of the series. Johnny Roisum was the hero in the extra session of game one, burying the overtime winner for the Tommies.

St. John’s (8-5-2)

The Johnnies split over the weekend, losing to Wisconsin-River Falls 2-1 and defeating Wisconsin-Superior 1-0.

St. Mary’s (8-5-2)

A 2-1 win over St. Thomas salvaged the weekend series for the Cardinals, with Bob Kinne scoring the game-winner in the second game.

Augsburg (9-4-0)

After defeating Wisconsin-Eau Claire 1-0 , the Auggies had the shutout turned around on them, falling to UWEC 5-0. Up next for the Auggies will be a series against Bethel this weekend.

Concordia (8-4-1)

All four of the Cobbers’ losses have come on the road, and this past weekend was no exception. Concordia lost to Wisconsin-River Falls 4-2 and 4-1, ending the Cobbers' three-game winning streak.

Gustavus Adolphus (7-5-1)

Gustavus downed St. Norbert 1-0 to open 2017, and will get back in Minnesota Interscholastic Athletic Conference action with a series against St. Catherine’s on Jan. 13 and Jan. 14.

Hamline (6-5-1)

The Pipers have not won a game since Dec. 2, losing to Marian (Wis.) 3-0 and tying Wisconsin-Stevens Point 4-4 over the weekend.

Bethel (6-5-2)

The Royals managed just one goal in each game this weekend, being swept by Concordia (Wis.) by scores of 3-1 and 2-1.
