What is the best way to hold off a conference rival? Allowing that rival to score just once in six power play tries seems like a good start.

“They did a great job,” Cretin-Derham Hall coach Brooke White-Lancette said after her Raiders killed five of six penalties against Suburban East Conference foe Mounds View on Tuesday night en route to a 4-1 victory. “We just wanted to make sure that we could contain them and do the little things right,” White-Lancette said.

Doing those little things right is difficult when you have players cooling their heels in the penalty box at five separate stages of the second period, and White-Lancette admits that the barrage of calls disrupted the Raiders’ tempo of play more than once.

“It changes the momentum of the game,” White-Lancette explained. “We’re buzzing five-on-five, and then to get penalty after penalty after penalty, you have to adjust a little.”

Sophomore forward Emily King didn’t allow the tightly called game to slow her down, netting a hat trick and adding an assist to have a hand in all four of the Cretin-Derham Hall goals.

Senior defender Sophie Marvin scored the lone goal in the loss for the Mustangs (10-4-0, 7-0-0).

King said that the Raiders (9-4-2, 7-2-0) are getting back on the same page after losing in a shootout to Roseau and then falling in regulation to Eagan during the Eden Prairie Holiday Tournament held Dec. 27-29.

“Now that we’re together as a whole, we’re really picking it up and we’re working together,” King said.

King has been picking it up since this summer, when she was selected to compete in the USA Under-18 Player Development Camp. King recorded three points in five games against some of the best players from around the country.

“I feel like that’s really improved me, and helped me become more of a team player,” King said.

White-Lancette, who took over the Cretin-Derham Hall job after John Pohl resigned after last season, is a co-founder of the well-known women’s semi-professional team, the Minnesota Whitecaps.

White-Lancette also played for four seasons at Northeastern University, and has been training hockey players in Minnesota since 2003.

Aside from her infectious enthusiasm and obvious hockey pedigree, King says that White-Lancette is enjoyable to have as a coach.

“She’s been a huge help,” King said. “She’s just a fun coach to have.”
