On Saturday night, Eden Prairie got back into the win column, stopping Edina 6-1 in the finale of the Edina Holiday Classic.

“We made some good decisions with our lines,” Eden Prairie coach Lee Smith said after the game. “We had to figure out a way to get three lines rolling.”

It seemed that any line the Eagles had on the ice was rolling on Saturday, as the Eagles (5-2-0) scored once in the first period, twice in the second and three times in the third en route to the win.

“We made some adjustments, brought up a (junior varsity) kid, and he performed really well for us,” Smith said, referring to forward Joey Graen.

The forward line of Graen, Nick Benson and Jake Olson checked Edina closely, wearing down the Hornets and enabling seniors Casey Mittelstadt and Hunter Johannes to capitalize on the fatigued Hornets.

Mittelstadt finished Saturday’s game with two goals and an assist, running his season totals to seven goals and 16 points.

“He’s going to do his thing, but we gotta find people that can help log the minutes,” Smith said of Mittelstadt’s performance.

Johannes scored a goal and had two assists in the win, and says that playing with Mittelstadt is nothing new.

“(We) got me and Casey back together, we played together last year,” Johannes said.

Johannes has recorded three goals and 10 assists on the season after totaling 12 goals and 26 points in the Eagles’ run to the state tournament runner-up finish in 2016.

“I’ve played with him for awhile, so I kind of know how he plays,” Johannes said. “When I play with him I usually know where to go.”

Grand Rapids, the tournament’s only undefeated team, was handed a 3-1 loss courtesy of Elk River on Saturday.

The Elks blocked shots and disrupted any momentum the Thunderhawks managed to manufacture, holding Grand Rapids to just 15 total shots.

Elk River, ranked No. 4 in the latest Class AA state coaches’ poll, defeated the No. 1 and No. 3 ranked teams over the weekend, handing losses to Eden Prairie on Thursday night and the Section 7-AA rival Thunderhawks (7-1-0) on Saturday.

The teams battled to a 1-1 draw after the first two periods, with Blake McLaughlin scoring for Grand Rapids and Nate Horn tying the game for Elk River in the first period.

Connor Bizal notched the go-ahead goal for the Elks (6-1-0), and Jax Murray added an empty-net insurance goal.

Goaltender Benny Meyers padded his already impressive Holiday Classic resume with 14 saves, giving him 64 over the three Classic games.
