COLLEGE HOCKEY ROUNDUP: 'Splitsville' for Nine State of Hockey Teams

Minnesota-Duluth Men Remain No. 1 in USCHO Poll

D1 Men

Minnesota-Duluth (10-2-2)

The Bulldogs once again maintain their No. 1 ranking in the United States College Hockey Online poll, garnering 44 first-place votes.

The next game for the Bulldogs, who have not played since Nov. 19, will be Dec. 9 against the No. 2 rated Denver Pioneers.

Minnesota (7-5-2)

Minnesota split with Ohio State over the weekend, with the Golden Gophers winning game one 5-3 and allowing eight goals in game two’s 8-3 defeat. The No. 11 Gophers will travel to East Lansing to face Michigan State next weekend.

Bemidji State (12-5-1)

After being swept by Princeton over Thanksgiving weekend, the Beavers salvaged a split with Michigan Tech the following week, winning 3-1 and losing 2-1. The Beavers are currently ranked No. 13 in the USCHO poll.

Minnesota State (9-5-2)

The No. 16 Mavericks engaged in a high-scoring pair of games with Alaska-Fairbanks over the weekend, with 20 goals scored between the two teams. The Mavericks earned a 7-3 win in the first game, and the second matchup ended in a 5-5 tie.

St. Cloud State (7-6-1)

The Huskies rebounded after a sweep at the hands of North Dakota with a split against Western Michigan. St. Cloud State, ranked No. 17, will host Nebraska-Omaha next weekend.

D1 Women

Minnesota (14-2-2)

Ranked No. 2 in the USCHO poll, the Golden Gophers downed No. 1 Wisconsin 2-0, and then fell to Badgers 8-2 in the second game of the series. Sidney Peters made 37 saves to earn the shutout victory in game one.

Minnesota-Duluth (12-3-3)

The Bulldogs have won four straight after sweeping St. Cloud State over the weekend. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 3, travel to Mankato to face Minnesota State next weekend.

Bemidji State (6-11-1)

The Beavers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over Minnesota State, but fell to Mavericks 3-2 in game two. The 2-0 win over the Mavericks was goaltender Brittni Mowat’s second shutout of the season.

St. Cloud State (5-12-1)

After losing twice at the Windjammer Classic, the Huskies returned to St. Cloud and were promptly swept by Minnesota-Duluth, losing 3-0 and 3-2.

Minnesota State (4-12-2)

The Mavericks bounced back from a 2-0 loss to Bemidji State in the first game of the weekend’s series with a 3-2 win over the Beavers in game two.

D3 Men

Augsburg (8-1-1, 3-1-0)

The Auggies, ranked No. 6 in the latest United States College Hockey Online poll, suffered their first loss of the season on Dec. 3 to St. Olaf, falling to the Oles, 2-1. The loss gives the Auggies a split in the series after winning game one, 2-1.

St. Thomas (6-2-3, 5-0-1)

Cracking the USCHO poll at No. 15 nationally, the Tommies remain unbeaten in Minnesota Interscholastic Athletic Conference play after sweeping Hamline 3-2 and 6-4. Tommie goaltender Benjamin Myers leads the MIAC in total saves with 224.

St. Mary’s (5-4-2, 4-2-0)

The Cardinals have lost three straight games after being swept by Concordia 5-1 and 3-2 over the weekend. Next up for the Cardinals is a series against conference-leader St. Thomas.

St. John’s (6-4-2, 3-2-1)

The Johnnies are unbeaten in three straight games, beating Gustavus 3-1 and tying the Gusties 2-2 after a shootout. Forward Sam Valerius is tied for second in the MIAC in goals with six.

Hamline (6-3-2, 3-3-0)

A sweep at the hands of St. Thomas hurts the Pipers in MIAC play, but Hamline will face three Wisconsin schools in the next three games, and have not lost to a Wisconsin school in three tries this season.

D3 Women

Augsburg (8-2-0, 5-1-0)

The Auggies remain ranked No. 10 after sweeping St. Olaf by a pair of identical 3-0 scores. Rebecca Sonnek made 30 saves to earn the first shutout, while Leah Patrick picked up the second blank sheet with 22 saves in game two.

Concordia (7-2-1, 5-1-0)

The Cobbers did not give up a goal in series sweep of St. Mary’s over the weekend, defeating the Cardinals 2-0 and 5-0. Goaltender Andrea Klug made a combined 39 saves to pick up the shutouts.

Hamline (6-3-0, 4-1-0)

A split with St. Thomas was the result of the weekend series for the Pipers, edging the Tommies 3-2 and losing the finale 6-2.

Gustavus (6-3-1, 3-2-1)

Three has been the magic number in the past three games for the Gusties, with a 3-1 win and a 3-2 win over St. Benedict this weekend following a 3-2 win over Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Nov. 29. Goaltender Amanda Dinella is second in the MIAC in save percentage at .954.

Bethel (4-3-2, 3-1-2)

The Royals split with St. Catherine over the weekend, winning game one 4-3 and losing game two 3-2. The Royals will take on Northland (Wis.) next weekend before the holiday break.
