Consider the Holy Family Catholic hockey team en fuego after this weekend.

The Fire edged Edina for the first time in program history 2-1 on Friday night, and then burned through Maple Grove for a 5-1 victory on Saturday night to claim the Turkey Trot championship at the Plymouth Ice Center.

“It was a good second and third,” Fire coach Noel Rahn said, adding that the Fire’s performance in the first period left much to be desired. “We gave up a couple of breakaways to (Jarrett) Cammarata and (Sam) Huff, (who) we tried to isolate,” Rahn explained.

Junior defenseman Peter Tabor also bemoaned the first period, and credited the Fire forward lines for turning the game around.

“Our forwards started to bang some in, so it kind of got us all going,” Tabor said.

The Fire (2-0-0) poured 11 shots on net in the second period, getting three goals out of the barrage from a trio of forwards in seniors Patrick Reddan, Ethan Mesler and junior Ben Almquist.

Maple Grove’s Tyler Borsch cut the Holy Family Catholic lead to 3-1 at the 6:49 mark of the third period, prompting a swing of momentum that was reversed less than five minutes later when Tabor’s power play shot from the point floated past Crimson (1-1-0) goaltender Nick Lapoint.

One of Tabor’s two assists also came with the man-advantage, feeding Almquist for an orchestrated deflection.

“(Ryan) Thang, our forwards coach, has been telling us all about that play all week long in practice, so we finally got it to work in a game,” Tabor said.

Senior forward Nick Michel was the recipient of Tabor’s second assist on the goal that stretched the Fire lead to 5-1.

The Fire power play unit could be a point of strength this season, with the team converting three times in nine chances during the Turkey Trot’s two games.

Tabor is confident that the Fire will continue their blazing start.

“There’s a lot more to come from this team,” Tabor said. "Everyone has (Eden Prairie) in our section looking really good,” Tabor continued, adding a warning for fans and pundits ready who still aren’t believers.

“Everyone’s sleeping on Holy Family, I’m telling you that right now.”
