The back-to-back defending NCAA champion Gopher women's hockey team invites fans to celebrate the program's 2016 national title at a banner-raising ceremony prior to Friday's season-opener against Lindenwood at Ridder Arena.

Fans should plan to be in their seats by 6:45 p.m. CT before the 7:07 p.m. CT puck drop to see the team hang the 2016 national championship banner.

In his nine seasons as the head coach of the University of Minnesota women’s hockey team, Brad Frost has won nearly 300 games and four national championships and coached seven Olympians.

Not bad for under a decade with the top job at arguably the top women’s college hockey program in the country.

But despite all of the impressive numbers, Frost maintains that triumphs on the ice are not measured simply by won-less record.

“The biggest thing I have learned (as a coach) is to define success differently,” Frost said in a recent email. “Success is not winning hockey games. Success is giving your best effort, having a great attitude and being a part of something bigger than yourself.”

That commitment to being a part of something bigger culminated in a national championship last season, as the third-seeded Golden Gophers upended second-seeded Wisconsin 3-2 in the semifinals and No. 1 seed Boston College 3-1 in the finals.

The Gophers will lose just five players from last year’s team, and return dynamic offensive forces on Dani Cameranesi and Kelly Pannek among others to this year’s squad.

Frost says that the returning players and the coaching staff know better than to confuse last season’s success with the unknown of the coming months.

“Every year is different and new. We graduated five great players and we have six new players as part of our team,” Frost explained. “Our team will never be comfortable and will always strive to be the best we can be.”

Frost also adds that his team refuses to let outside expectations dictate how they will play or conduct themselves.

“We need to control the things that we can control, our attitude and our effort,” Frost said. “By focusing on the process we will give ourselves a great opportunity to win. There is never a guarantee, so we want to control the things that we can.”

Frost and the Gophers are keenly aware that they set an example for the girls playing the sport.

“Our players are incredible on the ice, but they are even better people off the ice,” Frost said.

“We want to set the standard for what it means to be a Gopher hockey player. We all take great pride in being examples to young girls throughout the state and around the country."
