Minnesotans Lead U.S. to Under-17 Five Nations Tournament Title

Led in scoring by three Minnesota natives, the United States emerged from the Under-17 Five Nations Tournament undefeated and as tournament champions, outscoring its opponents 31-6 in the process.

The USA defeated in succession Switzerland 6-2, Slovakia 10-1, the Czech Republic 6-1 and rounded off the tourney with a 9-2 drubbing of Germany.

Blake McLaughlin of Grand Rapids and Dev McCabe of North Oaks (St. Paul Academy/Summit School) ended the tournament atop the Five Nations leaderboard, each registering 10 points. McLaughlin scored six goals and McCabe added four.

McCabe and McLaughlin each scored at least one goal in each game of the tournament, with McLaughlin scoring twice in wins over Switzerland and Slovakia.

McLaughlin’s Grand Rapids teammate Gavin Hain finished second in scoring with three goals and seven points.

Roseau’s Ben Helgeson (Hill-Murray) and Moorhead’s Ethan Frisch each finished with a pair of assists.

Team USA has enjoyed a dominant run in the past two Five Nations tournaments, winning a combined nine games and losing zero.

Since 2011, the United States has gone 24-1 in the tournament.
