Both St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth have been eliminated from the 2016 NCAA Men’s Tournament, rendering the upcoming Frozen Four (April 7-9, Tampa, Fla.) without a team from the State of Hockey.
However, there are 15 native Minnesotans dotting the rosters of the remaining four teams.
North Dakota leads the way with seven Minnesota-born players, led by freshman forward Brock Boeser of Burnsville. Boeser has at least one more game to tie former North Dakota star and current Wild player Zach Parise’s mark for points in a freshman season. Boeser currently has 56 total points. Parise finished his first year with 61.
Last year’s national champion, and 2016 No. 1 overall seed, Quinnipiac features five Minnesotans, with senior goaltender Jacob Meyers (Minnetonka) being the longest tenured Bobcat. Meyers has been named to the ECAC All-Academic team his first three years at Qunnipiac.
Apple Valley native Derek Smith is a sophomore defenseman for the Bobcats, and said via text message that the Quinnipiac coaching staff and team atmosphere drew him to the Connecticut school.
“I chose Quinnipiac because I was impressed by the staff, facilities, school and most of all, the team,” Smith said. “It seemed like a good fit for me.”
Despite skating for a school located 1,290 miles from Apple Valley, Smith said that the amount of pride he takes in being a Bobcat and skating in this year’s Frozen Four transcends state lines.
“It’s obviously something you dream of playing in as a kid,” Smith said of the Frozen Four. “I’ve always carried my Minnesota state pride with me. But I carry just as much pride playing for Quinnipiac and this team going to the Frozen Four.”
