2016 Men’s Division I NCAA Tournament Field Announced

Two Minnesota schools have been selected to participate in the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. St. Cloud State received the No. 2 overall seed, just behind No. 1 Quinnipiac, while Minnesota Duluth received an at-large bid.

The Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul will host the West Regional, which includes St. Cloud State, Ferris State, Denver and Boston University. 

St. Cloud State opens tournament play against Ferris State on March 26 at 2 p.m. This is SCSU's 12th NCAA tournament bid since 1989 and its fourth consecutive NCAA tournament bid since 2013.  

Minnesota Duluth, making its fourth appearance in the NCAA tourney in the last six years, travels to Worcester, Mass., to face Providence in the first round, on March 25 at 3:30 p.m.

NCHC Frozen Faceoff Recap

St. Cloud State escaped its first round series with Western Michigan with a 4-3 overtime win and a 4-2 nail-biter, then edged Denver 4-2 to earn a place in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff finals.

In the title contest against in-state rival Minnesota Duluth, the Huskies received a stellar goaltending performance from Charlie Lindgren, who made 33 saves to secure a 3-1 win. Freshman forward Mikey Eyssimont scored in the second period and again in the third, and sophomore forward Patrick Russell added a goal for the Huskies (31-8-1).

Eyssimont was named to the Frozen Faceoff All-Tournament team, as well as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Defenseman Ethan Prow and goaltender Charlie Lindgren were also named to the All-Tourney team.

Minnesota Duluth also had close calls in its run to the conference playoff finals, sneaking past Miami (Ohio) by scores of 5-4 and 3-1 before downing top seed North Dakota 4-2 in the semifinals. Forward Dom Toninato and defenseman Willie Raskob were named to the All-Tournament team for the Bulldogs.

Big Ten Tournament Recap

Minnesota edged Ohio State 4-2 before falling to Michigan 5-3 in the finals of the Big 10 Tournament over the weekend.

The Gophers took a 3-2 lead over the Wolverines into the third period, before Kyle Connor, Zach Werenski and Tyler Motte ripped off goals for Michigan in the final 16 minutes of play.

Tyler Sheehy was the lone Gopher selected to the All-Tournament team.

The Gophers close out the 2015-16 season with a 20-17-0 record after tying an NCAA record with the program’s fifth-straight regular-season conference title and third-straight Big Ten regular-season title. ​

Werenski, goaltender Steve Racine and forwards J.T. Compher and Kyle Connor received All-Tourney accolades, with Connor taking home Most Outstanding Player honors.

Defenseman Luke Juha from Penn State was the other All-Tourney selection. 

WCHA Final Five Recap

Minnesota State battled but fell to Ferris State, 2-1, in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Final Five championship game in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Saturday.

Gerald Mayhew's penalty shot goal in the second period stood as the game-winner for the Bulldogs, which outshot the Mavericks 29-14. 

Minnesota State earned a spot in the WCHA Final Five title game following a hard-fought 2-1 semi-final win over Bowling Green. Brad McClure and Casey Nelson scored for the Mavericks.

Both McClure and Nelson were named to the WCHA Final Five All-Tourney Team, along with Mavericks goaltender Cole Huggins. Minnesota State finished the year with a 21-13-7 record.
